Gonzaga: Be Inspired!

Who would have thought that they were thinking of Ron Sims when they came up with that motto?

I was absolutely captivated by Mr Sims talk last week and it truly inspired me to do something great, what that is, I’m not sure yet. Probably the thing that hit me the most was his genuine love for people, which was instilled in him by his parents.

There were two things that I walked away with from that talk; Mr Sims’ is motivated by doing the right thing. From the stories he told, he fought for things not because it was a platform that he adhered to, or that was what was popular at the time, but rather it was the right thing to do. When he was going to lead a demonstration at his college because minorities weren’t being represented, he didn’t fight because it was fun, or he wanted to cause trouble; he did it, because it was the right thing to do.

The second thing that really impacted me was his respect for stands and opinions that differed from his. He spoke about how he refused to perform civil unions because the denomination that ordained his as a pastor didn’t allow for it. While he didn’t agree with the rule, he honored the sanctity of the organization that had instilled a level of trust into him as a pastor.

To be able to say I disagree with you, but I respect and honor your view because it is a part of your core values, I believe speaks volumes. It is that level of love and respect for everyone that is the only thing that will unite our country and politics; and that will take true leadership to complete.
